The Committee - 2026/27

  • President - Steve Preston

I first picked up a camera, our family Kodak Brownie 127, on a primary school day trip. In my 20s, I shot lots of slides during a stay in the Middle East, with my new 35mm camera.

Over the years, I have moved from holiday and travel snapshots on auto, from film to digital SLRs, to wildlife photography along the Thames, and in Africa, as well as travel photography in Europe - often featuring ‘distressed’ doors - and on a trip to Cuba.

My passion now is people centred photography, mainly street and documentary. My ambition is to make more street portraits.”

  • Immediate Past President - Alistair How - Harrogate Town AFC contact, Website and Social Media

I have had a life long interest in photography and the outdoors, starting my career at Kodak .

My photographic interest took on a new passion during covid and I continue to explore new genres and techniques.

I remain a committed landscape photographer, but these days I do a lot of sport, travel and street. Most recently I am pursuing fashion and portrait photography.

I started my photography journey with 110 and 126 cameras before a Pentax MV and a whole series of other makes. Since 2020 I have been a Nikon photographer with a D850, Z7ii and now a Z8. I also shoot a Sony compact camera.

I am a freelance photographer, PAGB, BPE and club judge. I am a trustee of The Royal Photographic Society.

  • Honorary Treasurer - Robin Ashworth

I probably got my first camera at age of 13, I certainly remember taking one on a school exchange when I was 14, a Beirette I think.

Had a couple of others after that and then bought an Olympus OM-1 at age 18, swayed somewhat by David Bailey. I have stuck with Olympus and now have the digital OM-1! I spent many hours in school/uni/own dark rooms and still have many of those photos.

My photography nowadays is almost all limited to holiday and family with occasional HPS trips. Joined HPS round 2011 and enjoy it immensely, though I spend more time on Excel than Lightroom. I have far too many hobbies and am also trustee/treasurer for our local village hall, so that photography often takes second place.

  • Mike Gosling - Secretary

I began with a 120-roll film Diana-F camera towards the end of the 1960s. This was followed by a Kodak Instamatic and eventually a first SLR camera, a Zenit-E. For many years most of my photography was landscapes taken whilst mountain walking and sports using the original Olympus OM1 cameras. I shot both colour slides and processed and developed black and white prints.

Having used various other brands, I now use the modern day OM1. I now shoot a wide range of genres, particularly landscapes, wildlife, documentary and sports trying out a variety of techniques such as long exposures and intentional camera movement.

  • Jackie Martin - Focus Group Coordinator

I started my photography journey around 2014 when I had my first Canon SLR and travelled to Iceland on a photography trip. I struggle to see a photographic “scene” - what looks good to my eyes doesn’t always translate into a good image.

Having joined HPS in 2019, I found that the talks by our superb visiting speakers and the judging remarks in the competitions, have helped me understand a lot more about photographic composition.

I became President of HPS for the 2021/22 season which involved a lot of zoom meetings for the first half of the season. Being inspired by a former member, Barry Carter, I now use OM System cameras and lenses and specialise in nature photography and really enjoy the challenge of taking birds in flight and other moving animals.

I run the monthly Focus Group meetings which all members are welcome to come along to, where we help each other improve our images. I look forward to meeting you.

  • Rozalia Szatanik - Social Media

My passion for photography stems from a lifelong passion for horses. Having worked in the equestrian world for most of my life, I was drawn to capturing horses in photos and improving my technical skills to help me show their beauty and character.

Now working as an equine photographer, I'm continuously learning and trying to further my craft. I love photographing all animals and I'm drawn to all things nature. At HPS I enjoy the variety of talks, and I try to pick up different tips and techniques which help me in my work and day-to-day photography.

I use Nikon cameras and I'm a self-taught Photoshop user, I also do a fair bit of studio photography with horses, using portable lights, backdrops etc.

  • Michelle Bray - Website and awards

Though I have had an interest in taking photos most of my adult life , my big break came on retirement from a career in Medicine- I retired in lockdown and went out locally with my camera virtually everyday, the cycle has been hard to break ever since . These days I have more camera bags than handbags-a woman can never have too many!

I take photos of anything and everything but with a slight bias toward wildlife.

I take photos of anything and everything  but with a slight bias toward wildlife.

    Current camera  : OM I mark 2

Editing : mainly Lightroom, with a limited use of photoshop (due to lack of knowledge)

    My photography mottos:

o Shoot with your heart, not with your eyes

o Everyday is a school day

My other hobbies include fell walking and music (piano and rock choir)

  • Richard Chave-Cox - Meeting Room Coordinator

I was an enthusiastic photographer from the age of 5, starting with a box brownie then moving onto a Kodak Instamatic till 13yrs old. Then a proper camera. This enthusiasm waned with university life, to be rekindled once I retired. Then dipped my toe into digital with one of the early mirrorless cameras Panasonic G2. I now use Fuji.

I tend to take photographs rather than make them, situation, trips and events. Both a a child and once I joined HPS (in 2012) people have been very generous with time, advice and tuition.

I am very happy to help anyone starting this fascinating creative hobby.

  • Robert Maddison - Technology team

I have been interested in photography since my school days, but my passion developed further after purchasing my first DSLR (a Nikon) in 2010 ahead of a trip to the Italian Lakes. Since then, photography has become a rewarding creative outlet and an ongoing learning journey.

I consider myself an enthusiastic amateur photographer who is always looking to develop new skills and improve my images. Working in technology, I enjoy exploring new techniques and keeping up with the latest developments in photographic software and equipment. I’m a self-taught Lightroom user and having recently upgraded to a mirrorless camera, I’m still exploring its capabilities.

My main interests are landscape, travel, and outdoor photography, although I also enjoy photographing nature and wildlife whenever the opportunity arises.

Following a talk at HPS, I recently started exploring astrophotography, something that I’d never previously considered, and I'm enjoying the challenges of capturing photographs of the night sky. One of the things I most enjoy about the Society is the wide variety of genres covered by the talks and being inspired to learn new approaches, along with meeting photographers with a diverse range of interests.

  • Tim Needham - Technology team

I'm a decidedly amateur photographer. I was initially inspired, back in the 1970s, by photos in the NME by Anton Corbijn, Pennie Smith and Kevin Cummins, along with those by Brian Griffin and Eamonn McCabe elsewhere.

Despite these influences my main interest is landscape, although I've turned my hands to sports, architecture and wildlife with varying degrees of success. As a geologist, I've been fortunate to travel the world and see/photograph some wonderful places that continue to inspire.

HPS has played a vital role in my attempts to improve as a photographer with many thought provoking and inspirational talks.

  • Clive Beake - Camera club liaison

For me, photography is not just a hobby, it has become a way of balancing life. I prefer photographing the natural world - spending time outdoors makes me feel close to the roots of life.

I feel inspired by scenes that evoke a sense of tranquility and harmony.

Often, I am drawn towards the smaller details in the landscape - such as shapes, patterns or a particular colour and they become the primary subject of my images.

I feel I have succeeded with an image, if the viewer can engage with the subject and share at least part of the emotion I felt when I photographed it. More and more I'm drawn to reflections. I process my images in Lightroom and photoshop, which I have  been using since 2004. I'm as much interested in art as photography and regularly attend life drawing classes the two for me help each other

I have a gallery with 600 photos link below. I'm happy answer any questions if i can

  • Mike Hudson - Programme Development Co-ordinator

I first became fascinated by photography as a child, starting with a Kodak ‘Brownie’ but moving quickly to a 35mm format Werra, then Pentax. I learnt the basics of the art and science of photography, especially form, composition and visual simplicity whilst training at Leeds School of Architecture.

I don’t specialise in or favour any genre of photography, I take photographs purely for my personal enjoyment; I’m also very informal in my approach, seldom undertaking projects or pre-planning what I might photograph. Likewise, I rarely use a tripod; for me this limits the immediacy of the moment and the creative possibilities of specific locations - cameras are now so advanced in controlling camera shake and digital noise. I like to explore any environment or subject matter that catches my attention. That said, I have huge respect for those skilled photographers who do specialise in specific genres and produce awesome imagery…

I’ve been honoured to be President of HPS twice, in seasons 2012-2013 and 2022-2023. I’m currently our Programme Development Co-ordinator, and in that role my task is to research, seek out, identify and attract a broad range of talented guest photographers who are imaginative, innovative, and inspiring, especially those with interesting projects, unusual themes and techniques or striking subject matter, which can enhance our members’ experience and enjoyment of photography.

  • John Brown - Photo Walk Leader

My first proper camera was a Praktica MTL3 as a teenager, when I used to photograph local landscapes. At that point I used to use the school darkroom processing B&W which I really enjoyed.

I eventually lost interest in later years and rekindled it just before Covid, when I bought a Nikon DSLR .

My interest is still landscapes and woodland, The society has helped improve my photography and I am keen to get out there taking pictures.

I now have a Cannon mirror less and use mainly lightroom for processing.

I took on organising informal photo walks as I think we should get out there taking photos together, as well as being social, it is a great opportunity to learn from each other.

  • Graeme McGibbon - Competitions co-ordinator

My photographic journey started in earnest at the age of 18 in combination with my other passion for mountaineering. Whenever I was on the mountains a camera was part of my essential equipment.  I started out with a 120-roll film camera and by way of 4 increasingly sophisticated cameras I now own a Nikon D850 with 24-70mm sigma Art lens. Yes, it's a weight, but for me it's worth it.

Although my main interest was Landscape photography' since becoming a member of Harrogate Photographic Society my interests have expanded, principally due to the excellent talks and also because of seeing what other members of the club exhibit. I now enjoy street / travel and in camera creative techniques.

Although the digital darkroom (lightroom mainly) can be frustrating, I find it satisfying to produce the final printed image (from digital negative) up to A3+ size.

My photography has always given me a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction.
