Panels - some examples
Gannets at Bempton Cliffs - Michelle Bray Each spring bird activity ramps up at Bempton Cliffs on the East Coast as the various species there prepare to reproduce and raise their young. In this panel I have attempted to show Gannets at busy at work on the cliffs within the various stages of their cycle of reproductive activity which is always a pleasure to witness.
Marmite buildings - Alistair How Brutalist architecture – uncompromising buildings placing structure above decoration and using bare building materials such as concrete, steel and glass remain stoically stark despite decades of weathering. This panel, inspired by the photography of Martin Dust, presents a series of locations accentuated by a colour tint or highlight. The aim is to focus and expose not promote or celebrate. After all, ‘haters gonna hate’, and like brutalism itself, it’s about function and effectiveness over aesthetics and sentimentality.
Rydale Cross to Cracoe War Memorial, Rydale - Steve Oxley I've made the steep climb up to the ridge between Rylsone Cross and Cracoe War Memorial many times, mostly in Summer when the moorland heather is stunning. On this occasion a covering of snow lingered on the fells and moors, creating great contrast with a myriad of boulders and stone walls, providing ideal conditions for monochrome photography. It was a wonderful opportunity to capture a series of compelling compositions from varying viewpoints.
Starling Murmuration - Mike Morley It is an incredible experience have tens of thousands of starlings flying low overhead at sunset in a murmuration and to feel the breeze from all their flapping wings. Long exposures make dramatic patterns in the sky but also the ever changing shapes of the mass of birds create unique images such as this whale, horse's head and running horse over Ripon racecourse
White Sands - in a different light - Rozalia Szatanik In this panel I aimed to show how changing lighting conditions can affect a landscape and transform it completely in a space of just a few hours. Here, starting at midday and finishing at sunset, the gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park USA change from snow white to blue and purple, with shadows adding dimension and depth. The wind constantly shifts the sand and covers up old footprints, so we never see the exact same scene twice.
Trials Bikes - Alistair How Trials riding requires expert skills to navigate around a course where riders are challenged to a series of elements within a time limit and without penalties. I wanted to capture the different challenges of the course, the concentration of the riders, and the terrain. At the same time my panel aims to show how challenging and technical the photography is. Speed, lighting, and focusing need to be changed constantly to capture the shot.
Abstractions - Ralph Woodhead Although I usually photograph anything of interest, I've always been attracted by shapes and patterns such as reflections and swirling water. After the HPS Monday evening lecture by Tony Hall, I have been experimenting with abstract images. His presentation included the use of ICM and blending modes. These four images are the results at the end of 'Week 3' - just in time for this panel competition!
Door Artwork, Rua de Santa Maria, Funchal - Mike Hudson Over the years, in Rua de Santa Maria - one of the oldest and narrowest cobbled streets in Funchal, Madeira - property owners have commissioned artists to decorate the front doors of their buildings in attractive, eye catching ways for the amusement of visitors. This panel attempts to give a flavour of the diversity of artistic styles and decorative treatments used on many of the doorways along this busy pedestrian street.
Ripon's Annual Firework DIsplay - Michelle Bray The images were taken during a visit to a local annual charity firework display in RIpon which usually occurs on the eve of Bonfire night and never fails to please. Photographing fireworks is always a challenge, there being long wait until the next display if you dont get things quite right-you dont really know what your shots will turn out like until after the event - I hope that the images submitted capture the essence of the display
Reflected Landscapes - Robert Steemson The images in this panel show the landscape as a reflection in a body of water. While we often see a reflection within a landscape photograph, in this project, the reflection is the whole photograph. The reflected images appear oriented as the landscape would if viewed directly, but the images are transformed by surface ripples and objects in the water, giving interesting effects varying from nearly naturalistic to almost abstract.
Burano - Italy - Alistair Burano is one of the most photogenic locations, around a 40-minute ferry ride from Venice. Brightly coloured characterful houses, often reflected from the canals. Colours range from pinks and greens, to purple and oranges with the only requirement to be bright and bold. Displays of everyday life such as laundry hanging out to dry, open doors behind curtains and your boat outside. It's a hidden gem, so let's keep it a secret.
