The Annual Slide Competition was adjudicated by PAGB judge Steve Wilson from York once again. Before the slides were shown, President Marion Frith ARPS announced that one-time President Richard Bown ARPS has received a gold medal from the PAGB (Photographic Alliance of Gt. Britain) with the added honour of seeing his photograph displayed on the front cover of the Exhibition’s programme.
The Simmonds Trophy for best Pictorial slide was won by Len Downes for his stunning razor-sharp night picture of ‘Eilean Donan’, its son-et-lumiere lighting mirrored in a sparkling ink-black sea. Certificates of Merit were awarded to Mike Joyce for his beautifully soft, tranquil ‘Loch Garry Highlights’, Len Downes (again) for Lakeland’s ‘Blea Tarn’ and John Lindsay for his punchy colours in ‘Beach Working’.
The Marshall Trophy for Best Portrait or Figure went also to Len Downes for his quite different slide portrait he called ‘Badge’.
The Allen Trophy for best Record slide was awarded to Jim Counter for his beautifully lit study of ‘Gascoigne Almshouses, Aberford’. Certificates went to John Lindsay (again) for ‘Office Façade – Langeais’ and Peter Manning LRPS for ‘Time for Tea (Geraldine Pilgrim)’ an unusual portrait treatment of a tea table with used crockery showing lipstick on a teacup! A nice touch!
The Harrogate Corporation Trophy for best Natural History slide was won by Len Downes for ‘Fly Agaric’ and the only certificate in this class was awarded also to Len Downes, this time for his portrayal of ‘Tree Destruction – Glen Strathfarrar’ a very different but important natural history slide.
Peter Manning LRPS won The Outings Trophy with ‘Bridge Over’ an unusual view of the Humber Bridge taken from underneath.
Jim Counter swept the board in the Sports & Pastimes competition, winning not just The Preston Trophy with his slide of a yellow sports car he called ‘Shifting - Peter Rhodes Westfield SE’ but also the only certificates awarded in this class, first for ‘Water Obstacle – Allerton Cross Country Event’ and second, ‘Hanging Out – Harry Foster BMW’ featuring the daring of motor bike racers.
The Bojdo Trophy for Photo-Journalism was won by Peter Manning LRPS for his 4 slides telling the story of The Outward Bound Raft Adventure with a nice touch of humour in the last!
In the Creativity class Ross Billows won both The Brown Trophy for her magical ‘Liquid Light – Studley Royal’ and the only certificate for her equally exciting ‘Landscape Fantasy’.
The Civil Service Trophy for ‘The Set Subject’ (set by the President, Marion Frith ARPS and wittily entitled ‘My Family and other Animals’) was awarded to Peter Manning LRPS for his four slides set in a child’s playground which he called, in turn, ‘Swim the Lake’, ‘Climb the Mountain’, ‘Drive the Tractor’ and ‘Easy – No Hands’ and featuring his grandchild, Fabian. Our thanks went to Steve Wilson for his time and diligence in judging the competition well with much positive criticism and advice.
