Alison Raven from the Ackrill Media Group paid us a second visit on 21st January with her ‘Travelogue’ in which she showed us mostly pictures she had taken on holiday rather than those taken in her work as photographer for the ‘Harrogate Advertiser’.
To begin the digital projection of her collection, what better start than an atmospheric foggy day on the Stray followed by a shot of beautiful white horses, stunningly set off against a dark background in Masham? A barn in Lofthouse paid homage to the green of the Dales contrasted by the rich warm colours of Cheddar Gorge’s caves.. With a penchant for monochrome on account of its desired contrast, Alison showed some of her pictures in monochrome as well.
From New York’s Manhattan to Malaysia, the deep orange mottled sand of the Australian outback in comparison to rock pools in Cornwall; chickens in baskets on motorbikes headed for market (!) water lily pads like enormous flan cases; the Caribbean with its waterfalls and luscious flowers, they came thick and fast! Hoar-frosted leaves where Alison lives, a black swan with cygnets and 6 geese!
Borrowing from her newspaper pictures, the Ripon Gazette’s front page bore the oldest field mouse in all of England, being 2 years old, not just the 6 months lifespan as expected! Then there was Jerry Hall displaying her lovely long legs and late of ‘Emmerdale’ actress Claire King in a stunning silver dress as part of the Harrogate Theatre’s Fashion Show.
Walter Lewis’ vote of thanks emphasised our double delight in seeing a skilled journalist’s holiday pictures in comparison to the newspaper workload that Alison has to turn out professionally. Next week, the print competitions start with the results from judge Bob Redman ARPS, CPAGB from the Leeds Co-operative Photographic Society.
