HARROGATE PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY NOTICES

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

The committee hopes the programme for 2007-2008 will be of interest to both members and visitors. Our speakers will cover a wide range of subject areas, presenting images in a variety of forms: traditional prints (monochrome and colour), slides, digitally-projected images and audio-visual sequences. To improve viewing, speakers are increasingly using digital projection to present their work, showing also a number of prints with which to demonstrate their skill in printing and presentation.

A highlight is a visit by Dr. John Brackenbury of Cambridge University whose specialty is insects in flight. This meeting is being hosted jointly by ourselves and Harrogate Naturalist Society; we expect a full house.

In November we shall be giving a presentation to Normanton Photographic Society and I hope that as many members as possible will contribute to the images shown on that evening. Also in the same month we shall be holding digital imaging seminars.

Specialist groups (Slide Portfolio, Print Portfolio and the digital imaging group, Imagine) meet in members' homes and offer opportunities to show work in progress and receive constructive comment from participants. Newcomers may find this helpful in improving their photographic techniques and getting to know more society members.

An important part of the society's activities are club competitions. The monthly competitions, open to all, are intended to encourage members, especially those new to the Society, to show their work. The annual competitions have categories covering a wide range of subjects and methods of presenting images, from traditional prints and slides to digitally projected images.

In the New Year, we will be trialing a project called 'Vox Pop' in which members will submit print images for assessment by their peers rather than external judges. The intention is to give members confidence to enter club competitions.

This year, a panel of photographs will be displayed to help members to identify the current committee and their responsibilities.

I hope that we shall have a successful, instructive, and enjoyable year.

Marion Frith ARPS, HPS President.
