Turning the Lens on Harrogate

The Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate, Cllr John Fox, has welcomed an approach from the Harrogate Photographic Society whose members are willing to create an up to date photographic record of the town, its iconic buildings and major events.

Over the coming twelve months, members of the Society will be out and about in the town with their cameras and once complete the results will be presented to the council’s art gallery as an archive to be enjoyed by locals and visitors.

Councillor John Fox has been the first to be photographed for this project. He said: “Like many towns and cities, Harrogate has a great store of old photographs. However, neither the council nor the Photographic Society is aware of a comprehensive current collection.

“This 2009 project will complement other historical archives, each of which contains a ‘time capsule of Harrogate’ with the most famous being that produced by Bertram Unné between 1940 and 1979 when he recorded the life and times of the three Yorkshire Ridings.”

Dave Collier, President of the Harrogate Photographic Society, says that this will be a rewarding project for its Members. “We are an active Society and we hope that this Harrogate Photographic Project will stimulate an interest in artistic photography in the town. We welcome new members with or without experience and would be very happy to speak to anyone who is keen to get involved.

“Before the archive is presented to the council, we hope to be able to organise a public exhibition.”
